Beate Meissner, the Minister for Migration of the German state of Thuringia, has announced that the state will adopt a firm and resolute approach toward the return of migrants with criminal records. She emphasized that all available legal instruments and capacities will be used to deport Afghan asylum seekers who have committed crimes or are considered a threat to public security.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) member expressed support in a video message for the government’s decision to deport convicted asylum seekers, describing the measure as “entirely justified.” According to her, safeguarding public security is one of the core priorities of the responsible authorities in Germany.

Meissner stated that, despite differing assessments regarding the security situation in Afghanistan, the repatriation of individuals who have committed offenses or are deemed by German authorities to pose a security risk is a necessary step. She stressed that this process must be carried out within the framework of applicable laws and regulations.

The Thuringian Minister of Migration further noted that, within the scope of the state’s responsibilities, all available resources will be utilized to implement the return of Afghan and other asylum seekers with criminal records. She added that local authorities are coordinating this policy with federal institutions.

Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior announced on Tuesday, June 26, that 32 Afghan asylum seekers were transported to Kabul on a special flight from Leipzig Airport. These individuals were returned to Afghanistan under a German decision as part of the deportation program targeting migrants with criminal convictions.

Germany has been implementing the deportation of Afghan asylum seekers with criminal records since August 2024. German authorities are now organizing these flights directly to Kabul. Previously, transfers were carried out via mediation by Qatar, but following diplomatic changes, the process has continued on a direct basis.

The renewed emphasis on the continued deportation of Afghan asylum seekers with criminal records comes as a delegation from the Taliban and representatives of the European Union are expected to hold talks in Brussels on the return and management of Afghan migrants. The meeting is anticipated to focus on the challenges and mechanisms related to migrant returns.
