Sadio Camara, the Defense Minister of Mali, has been killed during coordinated rebel attacks in the country. The attacks began on Saturday, but the news of his death was only reported later.
Reuters has reported that Sadio Camara was targeted and killed at his home near Bamako, the capital of Mali.
The group “Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimin,” which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda, has claimed responsibility for leading these attacks. Additionally, Tuareg rebels have also cooperated with this group in the attacks.
Several cities and military bases have been targeted during the assaults. Reports indicate that the city of Kidal in northern Mali has once again fallen into the hands of the rebels, although there are differing reports regarding the exact situation in the city.
Sadio Camara was considered one of the key figures in Mali’s military government, and his death is seen as a heavy blow to the regime.
Following the incident, the Malian government declared two days of national mourning. The United Nations has also condemned the violence and called for a global response.
