Local sources in Nuristan province say that three miners were killed and two others injured after a mountainside collapsed onto a mining site in Barg-e-Matal district.
According to the sources, the incident occurred on Thursday evening (July 23/1 Asad) in the Pachigram area of Barg-e-Matal district. The mines in the area produce precious gemstones, including beryl, kunzite, and morganite.
The sources said that all of the victims and those injured were residents of Barg-e-Matal district.
The injured miners were taken to a local health facility for treatment, although no further details have been provided about their condition.
Local Taliban authorities in Nuristan have not yet commented on the incident.
Fatal accidents of this kind occur periodically in Afghanistan’s mining sector, claiming the lives of workers.
Unsafe and unprofessional mining practices, along with the lack of adequate safety measures for workers, are widely regarded as the main causes of such deadly incidents.
