Radio Hurriyat, a media outlet considered close to the Taliban, has reported that a conflict over ownership of a mountain between two tribes in Spira District of Khost Province and Giyan District of Paktika Province has entered its fourth consecutive day. According to the report, both sides have used light and heavy weapons during the clashes.
The outlet, on Sunday, 11 Asad, also published a video of the fighting, in which an individual can be seen firing a mortar round toward the positions of the opposing side. So far, Taliban officials have not released any details regarding the video or the nature of the clashes.
Reports of the use of heavy weapons in the conflict come at a time when the Taliban have repeatedly claimed to have established nationwide security and collected weapons from unauthorized individuals across Afghanistan. However, no accurate figures regarding casualties from the clashes have been released so far.
According to the report, Taliban forces have been deployed to the area to contain the conflict and restore control over the situation. It has also been reported that two houses in Guli village, located in Giyan District, were damaged as a result of shelling during the fighting.
Radio Hurriyat says the dispute over ownership of the mountain has continued for approximately 80 years between the Borkhel tribe in Spira District of Khost Province and the Giyankhel tribe in Giyan District of Paktika Province. According to the report, nearly 250 people from both sides have been killed in clashes related to the dispute over the years.
