The spokesperson of Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tahir Andrabi, strongly rejected the Taliban’s claims during his weekly press conference, which stated that parts of the “Sayed Jamaluddin Afghan University” in Kunar province were targeted in Pakistan’s airstrikes. Andrabi called these claims a “blatant lie” and added that discussions about the university being hit were simply a “baseless and fraudulent attempt” to gain public sympathy. He also reiterated the claim that Afghanistan serves as a safe haven for groups operating against Pakistan, referring to these groups as “Fitna al-Khawarij” and “Fitna al-Hind.”
These statements came after the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires in Kabul on April 28, protesting the cross-border attacks. The Taliban has stated that the Pakistani attacks led to civilian casualties, while Pakistani officials claim that Afghan fire caused civilian damage on their side.
Experts argue that such intense exchanges of accusations between the two sides further damage the trust atmosphere and increase the risk of escalating border tensions.
