Iranian media outlets have reported that an oil tanker was hit by an explosion in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, 4 Asad (July 26). According to these reports, the incident occurred after the vessel deviated from its designated navigation route and struck a naval mine.
Tasnim News Agency, which is affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that the affected tanker had veered off the route designated by Iran’s naval forces. No further details have been released regarding the exact cause of the incident.
So far, the identity of the tanker, the country under whose flag it was operating, and the condition of its crew have not been officially disclosed. Authorities have also not provided additional information about the incident.
The incident comes as recent military clashes between Iran and the United States were halted early Saturday after 13 consecutive nights of fighting. Last week, at least two vessels caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz following explosions during the conflict.
According to reports, during the 40-day war between Iran and the United States, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and planted mines in parts of the internationally significant waterway. The removal of these mines was reportedly part of an understanding between the two countries; however, the process was suspended after military hostilities resumed.
Meanwhile, Iran’s navy has established designated routes for vessels passing through the strait. However, reports indicate that some oil tankers and commercial ships have been navigating waters near Oman’s coast under escort by U.S. forces.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on several oil tankers and commercial vessels. However, details surrounding the latest incident and the exact cause of the tanker’s explosion have not yet been independently verified.
