Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, stressed that all countries have a responsibility to prevent the expansion of the use of force in international relations.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the meeting took place on Friday, July 24, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting in Kyrgyzstan. The report said Araghchi and Wang discussed regional developments and issues related to international relations.
According to IRNA, the Iranian foreign minister condemned the U.S. attacks on the country’s critical infrastructure and accused Washington of committing “war crimes.” He also said that all governments have a responsibility to prevent the erosion of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and the normalization of the use of force in international relations.
Araghchi further attributed the current security situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the broader region to what he described as “the United States’ breach of commitments and its disruption of the implementation of Iran’s obligations under Clause 5 of the Islamabad Understanding.”
IRNA also reported that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing’s readiness to provide any assistance necessary to help promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
China and Russia are regarded as two of Iran’s key economic and political partners. Some reports have also described them as providing Iran with technical and military support. However, U.S. President Donald Trump has said that neither country is involved in the ongoing confrontation between the United States and Iran and that neither is providing military assistance to Tehran.
On Thursday, Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, claiming that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin had told him they would not provide Iran with any weapons. He added that neither country was involved in the matter and that any such action would not be in their interests.
