Taliban morality police officers in Herat have reportedly detained at least five women for not covering their faces and transferred them to an undisclosed location. Eyewitnesses said the women and girls were wearing full hijab at the time of their detention but had not covered their faces with masks or cloth.
One eyewitness said that at around 5 p.m. local time, two young women accompanied by their elderly mother were stopped by morality police officers on Mahbas Road. According to the witness, both women were wearing full hijab but had not covered their faces.
In a separate incident, three women were detained by Taliban morality police officers on Majidi Road. According to witnesses, the women were stopped for not covering their faces and were subsequently taken to an undisclosed location.
An eyewitness also said that a man who objected to the detention of the women was beaten by Taliban officers. No further details have so far been released about the condition of the detained women or their whereabouts.
The incidents come as Taliban morality police officers continue, in some cases, to enforce restrictions on women’s clothing and their conduct in public spaces.
