Local sources in Takhar report that the Taliban have promised to return previously confiscated weapons and military equipment to Ghulam Hussain, a Tajik commander within their ranks. This move comes amid escalating tensions over gold mines in Chah Ab district.
According to the sources, the Taliban arrested Ghulam Hussain in September/October 2024 (Mizan 1403) and seized over 400 light and heavy weapons, several vehicles, and a large quantity of ammunition from him. He served time in prison and, following his release, was barred from returning to his native Chah Ab district.
Sources add that restrictions on Ghulam Hussain were eased about a week ago, and he has now been permitted to return to Chah Ab.
In recent weeks, Takhar’s Chah Ab district has witnessed growing friction over gold mining operations. Reports indicate that local residents staged protests against the extraction activities, which were forcefully suppressed by the Taliban.
During his restriction, Ghulam Hussain spent most of his time in Kabul, with occasional visits to Taloqan, but was not allowed to travel elsewhere without authorization from Taliban intelligence.
The Taliban have not yet issued an official statement on the matter, and the reasons behind their change of stance toward Ghulam Hussain remain unclear.
Ghulam Hussain was previously a commander under Bashir Qanat. According to reports, he drew revenue from the Nooraba gold mine in Chah Ab district and commanded hundreds of armed men.
