The Taliban’s Disaster Management Preparedness Authority says the death toll from the devastating floods in Nuristan has risen to 24, with 85 people injured and 15 others still missing.
Taj Mohammad Hemat, deputy spokesperson for the authority, said on Thursday (1 Asad) that four days after the floods occurred, the number of missing people had decreased from 85 to 15, as many individuals who had fled to mountainous and remote areas during the floods have since returned to their homes.
Hemat added that due to the lack of telecommunications services, authorities were unable to establish contact with those individuals, but only 15 people remain missing at present.
Meanwhile, the Taliban-controlled Arg (Presidential Palace) stated in a condolence message that the victims included the mayor of Nuristan and a battalion commander. The Arg called on traders, wealthy individuals, and other Afghan citizens to increase their assistance to families affected by the floods.
The Taliban’s Disaster Management Preparedness Authority said that relief efforts have begun and that each victim’s family has so far received 20,000 Afghanis in cash assistance. In addition, food and non-food aid is also being distributed.
The Arg has urged people to avoid living and conducting business in areas at risk of flooding, particularly locations where warnings have been issued by the meteorological authorities.
