Summary

The Jamiat-e Islami of Afghanistan, in a statement, condemned the Taliban’s handling of protesters in Yaftal district of Badakhshan province, describing the action as a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights and an affront to the values, culture, and traditions of the Afghan people. The party also stated that the Taliban would face serious challenges in the face of the collective demands and will of the people of Afghanistan.

Public protests in Yaftal-e-Payin district of Badakhshan province began on Saturday, 10 Asad (July 31), following reports that Taliban forces had conducted a physical search of a woman. Local residents told the media that, in addition to this incident, what they described as widespread pressure and mistreatment by the Taliban against the local population were among the main factors behind the demonstrations.

Local sources confirmed that Taliban forces opened fire in an attempt to disperse the protesters. According to these sources, the shooting resulted in casualties; however, no official or precise figures regarding the number of deaths and injuries have been released so far, and Taliban officials have not commented on the matter.

In its statement, Jamiat-e Islami of Afghanistan further condemned the Taliban’s actions and emphasized the need to preserve unity and solidarity among the people of Badakhshan and other Afghan citizens in confronting what the party described as “oppression and injustice.” The party also expressed support for what it referred to as the “legitimate defense of citizens” and the resistance of Afghan women against the Taliban.

The statement further noted that the people of Badakhshan have a long history of opposing authoritarianism and advocating for justice, and according to the party, they will not surrender in the face of pressure and coercive measures. Jamiat-e Islami concluded by stressing that the Taliban must take into account the demands and will of the Afghan people, warning that the group will face serious challenges in response to the collective aspirations of citizens.
