Summary

Mohammad Omar Daudzai, referring to recent protests in Herat and Badakhshan, said that these two provinces have a long history of political and social developments in Afghanistan.

In a Facebook post published on Tuesday, Daudzai wrote that many conflicts in Afghanistan throughout history have revolved around “women, wealth, and land.” He claimed that the current tensions in Badakhshan and Herat can also be examined within this same framework.

According to him, the unrest in Badakhshan appears to be linked to gold mines and natural resources, while in Herat, the treatment of women and the restrictions imposed on them have become a key source of public dissatisfaction.

The former Afghan Interior Minister emphasized that the Taliban’s inappropriate treatment of women in Herat has provoked reactions and anger among a segment of the province’s residents.

Daudzai also stated that the ongoing developments in Badakhshan and Herat have hidden and complex dimensions and should not be viewed from a single perspective.

He further noted that both provinces hold significant geopolitical importance and also occupy a notable position in Afghanistan’s security dynamics.

In another part of his remarks, Mohammad Omar Daudzai said: “Hijab is meant to preserve the honor and dignity of women, but disgracing a society in the name of preserving honor is a clear sign of ignorance and lack of wisdom.”

The Taliban have not yet officially responded to Daudzai’s comments regarding the recent events in Herat and Badakhshan.
