Sources have confirmed that Abdul Karim Abbasi, the former head of the Panjshir Provincial Council, has been released from Taliban custody after serving two years and five months in prison. According to these sources, the Taliban arrested him on February 28, 2024 (9 Hoot 1402) in Kabul on charges of "cooperation with the Resistance Front."
Based on information from these sources, a Taliban military court in Kabul had sentenced Abdul Karim Abbasi to 12 years in prison. It is also reported that he was held in Bagram Prison during his detention.
Sources state that following the collapse of the previous government, Mr. Abbasi did not leave Afghanistan despite the prevailing pressures. According to them, he chose to remain in the country relying on the Taliban’s declaration of "general amnesty" and continued his personal endeavors.
According to sources, after the Taliban came to power, Mr. Abbasi owned a shop selling lapis lazuli in the Shahr-e Naw area of Kabul and was engaged in personal business activities. Prior to the Taliban's return to power, he served as the head of the Panjshir Provincial Council for five years.
Over the past three years, the Taliban have arrested numerous individuals predominantly residents of Panjshir province on charges of "cooperation with the Resistance Front." Reports have also emerged regarding torture and, in some cases, the deaths of several detainees in Taliban detention centers.
The Taliban have not yet officially commented on the arrest, sentencing, or release of Abdul Karim Abbasi, the former head of the Panjshir Provincial Council.
