According to a Reuters report, Oman has presented Iran with a proposal for the joint regional management of the Strait of Hormuz. Under the proposal, Iran would not have exclusive control over this vital maritime route; instead, a joint mechanism would be established among the countries using the strait to regulate navigation, environmental protection, and search-and-rescue operations.
According to the source, Oman’s proposal is inspired by the management model of the Strait of Malacca, where countries that use the strait voluntarily contribute financially to maritime security, environmental protection, and search-and-rescue efforts.
The proposal comes after the United States halted its air strikes on Iran last week, raising hopes for a diplomatic resolution. Negotiations are expected to help restore the safe and normal movement of international commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Washington is engaged in “good talks” with Iran and that a deal remains possible, but he warned that if negotiations fail, the United States would resume its air strikes.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has held discussions with the foreign ministers of Oman and Saudi Arabia regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Araghchi emphasized the importance of strengthening regional stability and enhancing joint diplomatic efforts.
