Rangin Dadfar Spanta, former National Security Adviser of Afghanistan, says that no one engages in serious negotiations with weak political groups, and that if talks are held with them, they would only be about surrender and unconditional allegiance.
In a message marking the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power, Spanta emphasized the importance of civil, political, and other forms of resistance against the group, describing them as the “only genuine means” of liberating Afghanistan.
He said that Asad 1400 (August 2021) was not the first instance of the triumph of reactionary forces in Afghanistan’s modern history, but, in his view, it was unprecedented in terms of its destructive and long-term civilizational consequences.
Spanta stressed that the Taliban remain committed to their “destructive principles” and said that “supplication” will bring neither popular government and freedom nor justice and equality.
Spanta’s remarks come as Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister, recently rejected the need for any negotiations with opponents in an interview with the BBC, saying that nationwide security has been established in Afghanistan.
In his message, Spanta also emphasized the importance of civil and political struggle by Afghan women and men, saying that the country needs a just, law-based political system founded on the free will of the people a system in which all citizens can live in peace, security, and equality.
