The Taliban’s ministry of public health says it has inaugurated a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant named “Deem Pharma” in Herat, with an investment of approximately $30 million.
The ministry said on Thursday, 22 Asad, that the factory has the capacity to produce around 300 types of medicines. It was established with the aim of increasing domestic pharmaceutical production, providing high-quality medicines, and reducing Afghanistan’s dependence on imported drugs.
According to the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health, the foundation stone for the second phase of the factory was also laid. The second phase will be developed with an investment of $15 million to manufacture injectable medicines and will have an annual production capacity of 30 million ampoules and 25 million vials.
Noor Jalal Jalali, the Taliban’s Minister of Public Health, said the factory’s operation would reduce Afghanistan’s reliance on pharmaceutical imports from foreign countries and help the country achieve self-sufficiency in the production of medicines.
Previously, a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant worth millions of dollars was also inaugurated in Kandahar. Despite these developments, concerns remain over shortages of quality-assured medicines in Afghanistan.
