Local sources have reported a powerful explosion and sporadic gunfire in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan province. The incident reportedly occurred near the municipal building in the city.
According to preliminary information, a Toyota Hilux belonging to the Taliban, which was reportedly being used by the Taliban-appointed mayor of Faizabad, was targeted in an attack outside the municipality’s entrance.
Local sources say that the Taliban-appointed mayor was killed in the incident and that several other members of the group were injured. The injured were reportedly transferred to Faizabad Hospital for medical treatment.
Sporadic gunfire was also heard in the area at the time of the explosion. Reports indicate that roads surrounding the scene have been closed to civilian traffic, with movement in the area restricted.
