U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Tehran and Washington are engaged in talks, but in his view, Iran is not yet ready to reach an agreement.
According to Al Jazeera, speaking on Friday evening, July 24, during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the White House, Trump said negotiations between the two countries are ongoing. He stated that Iran is in discussions with the United States and wants to reach an agreement, but, in his opinion, the time is not yet right to finalize such a deal. Trump also said he is prepared to hear the other side’s views.
The U.S. president reiterated Washington’s longstanding position on Iran’s nuclear program, emphasizing that Iran must not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.
Trump further claimed that the U.S. military had inflicted severe damage on Iran’s military capabilities. He alleged that Iran’s navy and air force had suffered extensive losses, claiming that 250 fighter aircraft had been destroyed and 159 naval vessels had been sunk.
He went on to assert that Iran now possesses only limited radar capabilities and that its drone fleet has also been significantly reduced. According to Trump, although Iran continues to carry out occasional attacks, it has lost a substantial portion of its military strength.
Trump said the objective of these actions was to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, adding that Washington remains firmly committed to ensuring that Iran does not acquire such a capability.
These remarks come as officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran have not confirmed Trump’s claim that negotiations between Tehran and Washington are currently underway.
The latest confrontation between Iran and the United States reportedly lasted 13 days. During the conflict, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States declared a new naval blockade against Iran.
