According to data from the Taliban’s Ministry of Economy, approximately 49 percent of Afghanistan’s population is of working age, of whom nearly 26 percent of the labor force is unemployed.
In an analytical report, China’s Xinhua News Agency said that following the Taliban’s return to power, the security situation in Afghanistan has improved compared with previous years. However, unemployment, economic difficulties, declining investment, and the reintegration of returning Afghans remain among the country’s major challenges.
The report notes that the decline in international aid and development projects has also had a negative impact on the unemployment rate. Although the value of the Afghan currency has remained relatively stable, economic pressures on the population remain significant.
Meanwhile, the return of Afghan migrants from Pakistan and Iran has increased pressure on the labor market, housing, and public services. According to United Nations data, nearly seven million Afghans have returned to the country since late 2023.
The report also states that Afghanistan continues to face security challenges, with deadly attacks having occurred in various parts of Kabul in recent years. In addition, military clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan have taken place in recent months.
Despite the Taliban’s claims that the security situation has improved, the lack of economic opportunities, high unemployment, and the challenge of meeting the needs of returning Afghans remain among the most significant challenges facing the group during its rule.
