Summary

In the wake of Pakistan’s airstrikes on the provinces of Kunar, Paktia, and Paktika, Anouar El Anouni, spokesperson for the European Union, has emphasized the necessity of protecting civilians and ensuring full compliance with international humanitarian law in all circumstances.

El Anouni wrote on Monday in a post on the social media platform X: “We call for immediate de-escalation and restraint.”

Following recent Pakistani strikes in parts of Afghanistan, a number of international organizations and officials have also expressed concern over civilian casualties, urging adherence to international humanitarian law and warning against further escalation between Kabul and Islamabad.

The European Union has so far supported neither side and has called on all parties to uphold international legal principles and protect civilian lives.
