Former Afghan Attorney General Mohammad Farid Hamidi has expressed concern over videos circulating on social media allegedly showing Taliban forces mistreating the bodies of those killed and prisoners of war, describing such actions as contrary to human dignity, Islamic principles, and international law.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X on Friday, August 21, Hamidi said that desecrating bodies and insulting the dead represents “the height of ignorance, moral collapse, and a crime against humanity,” and should never be justified under any human or ethical principles.
The former attorney general stressed that human dignity is a divine gift and belongs equally to all people, regardless of race, religion, language, ethnicity, or nationality. He said this dignity must be respected even after death.
Referring to videos circulated on social media purportedly from Badakhshan, Badghis, and the Salang area, Hamidi said the footage appears to show Taliban forces, in some cases, treating the bodies of those killed in a degrading manner.
Hamidi described such conduct as a violation of Islamic principles and values, as well as international humanitarian law, including provisions related to the Geneva Conventions. He stressed the need to respect the dignity of those who have lost their lives during armed conflicts.
“War also has ethics, rules, and regulations,” he said, adding that responsibility for such acts does not rest solely with those directly involved. Commanders and officials who remain silent in the face of such conduct may also bear legal and moral responsibility.
His comments come as videos have been circulated and widely reshared on social media in recent days, purportedly showing Taliban forces mistreating and disrespecting the bodies of those killed. However, independent and verifiable information regarding the timing, location, and details of some of these videos is not available.
