Summary

The Hajji Piyada mosque in Balkh province is more than 1,000 years old and, according to many researchers, its construction dates back to the ninth century CE or possibly even earlier. The mosque may be one of the oldest Islamic structures in Afghanistan and Central Asia.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reported on Thursday, 29 Asad, that the United Nations supports efforts to document, preserve, and raise public awareness about Afghanistan’s cultural heritage, including the Hajji Piyada Mosque.

According to the report, a large portion of the mosque has been lost over time. However, its surviving wall decorations, floral motifs, grape-leaf designs, and geometric patterns remain intact.

UNAMA added that these decorations are considered valuable examples of early Islamic art and architecture and hold particular historical and cultural significance.

According to the report, the United Nations supports efforts to document and preserve the Hajji Piyada Mosque and other historic sites in Afghanistan, particularly the country’s cultural heritage.
