Turhan Saleh, the United nations development Programme (UNDP) representative in Afghanistan, visited the birthplace of Mawlana Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi in Balkh Province during a trip to northern Afghanistan.
Sharing photos of his visit to Mawlana’s khanqah in Balkh, he wrote: “A special moment visiting the birthplace of Mawlana Jalaluddin Balkhi in historic Balkh, where his words continue to inspire people across cultures and generations.”
The khanqah of Mawlana Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi’s father, which is regarded as the birthplace of the Persian-language poet and mystic, is located about 20 kilometres from Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh Province.
The khanqah is considered an important historical and cultural site in Balkh. In recent years, however, it has faced the risk of deterioration and collapse due to a lack of adequate attention and maintenance.
The Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture announced late last year that Turkey would undertake the restoration of this historic site, along with several other cultural monuments in Balkh. No further details have been released regarding the progress of the restoration project.
