Summary

Iran’s national football team failed to progress beyond the group stage for the seventh time in its FIFA World Cup history, as its campaign came to an end following the conclusion of the group-stage matches.

Drawn in Group G alongside New Zealand, Egypt, and Belgium, Iran finished all three of its matches in draws.

Team Melli opened its campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand before holding Belgium to a goalless draw in its second match.

In its third and final group-stage fixture, Iran faced Egypt at Seattle Stadium. Despite creating several scoring opportunities in an entertaining contest, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

With three points from three matches, Iran remained hopeful of advancing to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. However, none of the results required to secure qualification went in its favor.

Under the qualification scenarios, Iran needed either Ghana to defeat Croatia, Uzbekistan to avoid defeat against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or either Algeria or Austria to claim victory in their respective match.

Instead, Croatia defeated Ghana 2-1, the Democratic Republic of the Congo beat Uzbekistan 3-1, and Austria and Algeria played out a 3-3 draw, ending Iran’s hopes of reaching the Round of 16.

Speaking after the match against Egypt, Iran captain Mehdi Taremi said his side lacked the fortune needed to qualify and ultimately fell short of reaching the knockout stage.
