The Iranian government says it has received a response from the United States to Tehran’s latest proposal to resume a ceasefire in the Gulf. The response comes days after US President Donald Trump rejected the proposal.
An Iranian government spokesperson said on the social media platform X that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had conveyed Washington’s response to the government. However, the details of the response have not yet been made public.
Last week, Iran proposed that, if the United States ended its blockade of Iranian ports, Tehran would resume normal traffic through the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. Trump said on Sunday that he had rejected the proposal, while Araghchi had previously said that Tehran had not received an official response confirming its rejection.
According to Reuters, Washington’s message was conveyed to Araghchi through Qatari mediators. The main disagreement between the two sides now concerns the sequencing of their commitments, with each side seeking clarity on when the other would take the first step.
Tehran is seeking to revive a temporary agreement reached between the two sides in June. As part of these efforts, Qatari mediators have exchanged messages between Iranian and US representatives on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.
Iran is also insisting on retaining a role in managing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the world’s major energy transit routes, with roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through it before the escalation of hostilities.
