Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he will pardon students who made derogatory remarks against him during last month’s protests, stressing that punishing them and repeatedly taking them to court is not the solution.
In a video released on Friday, Modi said, “These are misguided young people; it is our responsibility to guide them in the right direction. Punishing them, dragging them into court, and subjecting them to social harassment will not change the situation.”
Political tensions in India escalated after question papers for a national examination were leaked, forcing nearly two million students to retake the test. The incident further fueled frustration among young people over education and employment opportunities.
The Kokrach Janata Party, which led the protests, said that hundreds of students had been arrested across several states.
The protests came to an end after India’s Minister of Education resigned and the government agreed to the demonstrators’ key demands.
