Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, has described the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee's update of the identity details of five senior Taliban officials as a "continuation of past failed experiences," stating that war-era policies against the Taliban must change.
Speaking to the Taliban-controlled National Television on Friday (August 30), Mujahid said that such sanctions were ineffective in the past and that the current measure is a repetitive and fruitless exercise that, according to him, will benefit no party.
He added that the UN Security Council should adopt a path of cooperation and engagement, avoiding the infringement of individuals' rights caused by sanctions.
On the other hand, the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee stated that the recent updates regarding the five Taliban officials are merely administrative and technical in nature and do not alter their sanction status or restrictions.
According to the updated list, the Taliban’s Minister of Interior, Minister of Hajj and Religious Affairs, Minister of Mines and Petroleum, Director General of Intelligence, and the Mayor of Herat are among those whose identity information has been updated.
Over past years, the United Nations and the international community have imposed travel and financial sanctions on numerous Taliban leaders, which remain in place.
