Summary

A senior Pentagon official has announced that the U.S. war with the Islamic Republic has so far cost $29 billion. This new figure represents an increase of $4 billion compared to the estimate provided at the end of last month.

Jules Hurst, Acting Chief of the Pentagon’s Accounting Office, told a House Appropriations subcommittee on Tuesday that this cost includes updating, repairing, and replacing equipment as well as operational expenses.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the $29 billion figure is not “final” and that the Pentagon is still reviewing it.

It is unclear how the Pentagon arrived at the $29 billion figure. A source told Reuters in March that the Trump administration had estimated that the first six days of the war alone had cost at least $11.3 billion.

On April 29, the Pentagon had announced that the war’s cost at that time had reached $25 billion.
