Summary

Local sources in Badakhshan province say that the Taliban are considering changes to the power structure in the Darwaz region amid growing tensions with Jamal Khan Fateh, one of the group’s influential commanders in the area.

According to informed sources, Ghulamullah, the Taliban brigade commander in Faryab province, has been proposed as a potential replacement for him in the position referred to as the “general commander of Darwaz.” Although this post has no formal definition within the Taliban’s official structure, it is used in practice to signify the authority of a local commander.

At the same time, reports indicate that Fasihuddin Fitrat, the Taliban’s Chief of Army Staff, and Amandin, the group’s governor in Helmand, have once again traveled to Faizabad. Sources say these visits are aimed at managing tensions and possibly implementing an arrest order against Jamal Khan Fateh.

The sources further add that talks with Jamal Khan Fateh in Nasi district of the Darwaz region have so far yielded no results, and the situation remains unclear.

Jamal Khan Fateh has been one of the Taliban’s influential figures in Badakhshan in recent months and was previously appointed as deputy governor in Zabul. However, his local influence in Darwaz has continued. Sources say much of the current tension is linked to competition over control and extraction of gold mines in Badakhshan resources that have become a key source of power and revenue in the province in recent years.
