Russia has warned NATO that any attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region in the Baltic Sea could prompt Moscow to use all of its military capabilities, including nuclear weapons, to defend its territory.
Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave situated between Lithuania and Poland, has in recent years become a major flashpoint in the confrontation between Moscow and NATO. Russia considers the increased military exercises, reconnaissance flights, and other Western military activities around the region to be contributing to heightened tensions.
NATO has rejected the warning. Mark Rutte, the organization’s secretary general, said that NATO is a defensive alliance and called on Russia to refrain from making “nuclear threats.” NATO has also said that it has no plans to threaten or isolate Russian territory.
Nikolai Sokov, a Russian nuclear analyst and former diplomat, told Reuters that Moscow’s warning could indicate growing influence among hard-line factions in Russia. He also raised concerns about the risk of miscalculation between the two sides if tensions in the Baltic region continue to escalate.
Relations between Russia and European countries have deteriorated sharply since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with tensions between the two sides also increasing in recent months.
