Seyed Jalal Hosseini Badakhshani, a distinguished scholar of Islamic philosophy and Ismaili studies, has died in London at the age of 85.
Shahrara News reported on Wednesday, August 12, that Badakhshani continued his studies at the University of Oxford, where he earned a doctorate in Islamic philosophy. He later worked at the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London and played a role in establishing the institute’s library.
For several decades, Badakhshani devoted his life to researching, editing, and translating philosophical and literary works from Iran and the Islamic world. A significant part of his scholarly work focused on the writings of Khwaja Nasir al-Din al-Tusi and the Ismaili intellectual tradition.
Among his notable works, he edited and translated Sayr wa Suluk and Rawdat al-Taslim, and contributed to the publication of several treatises by Khwaja Nasir al-Din al-Tusi.
The scholar also contributed to the publication of a number of academic works and helped researchers gain access to an image of the manuscript Dastur al-Munajjimin from the collection of the National Library of France.
Badakhshani was also among the founders of the Peyvand Association in Tajikistan. Throughout his career, he worked to strengthen connections among Persian-speaking communities and promote the Persian language.
