Credible media sources have reported that Mawlawi Abdul Rashid, the Taliban-appointed mayor of Kabul, has been arrested on allegations of corruption.
According to the sources, Taliban intelligence forces detained Mawlawi Abdul Rashid yesterday (Saturday, 20 June).
The sources also stated that, along with the Taliban mayor of Kabul, 20 district officials in the city were arrested.
Taliban spokespersons and the Kabul Municipality have not yet commented on the matter.
Following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, Mawlawi Abdul Rashid was appointed as the group’s mayor of Kabul on 17 October 2021 by decree of Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, the Taliban’s prime minister, and had remained in the position until now.
