Ismatullah Mujaddedi, former advisor to the National Security Council and son of Sibghatullah Mujaddedi, former President of Afghanistan, has returned to the country after nearly five years of residence in Turkey.
The Taliban’s Commission for Contact with Afghan Personalities announced that Mr. Mujaddedi entered Afghanistan from Turkey through this commission and expressed satisfaction with the conditions that facilitated his return.
Ismatullah Mujaddedi left Afghanistan for Turkey following the collapse of the republican system in August 2021. In the previous government, he served as an advisor to the National Security Council.
After returning to power, the Taliban established the Commission for Contact with Afghan Personalities with the aim of encouraging officials and political figures from the former government to return to the country. The commission has so far reported the return of a number of former officials and prominent figures through this process.
Mr. Mujaddedi’s return comes at a time when multiple United Nations reports, including those by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights, have documented cases of arbitrary detention, torture, mistreatment, and even killings of some members of the former military and government employees, despite the Taliban’s declaration of a general amnesty.
The Taliban have consistently rejected these reports and insist that the general amnesty decree has been fully implemented across the country.
