Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated in a Security Council meeting that, given the suspension of negotiations, the council must support the emergency framework proposed by the International Maritime Organization.

He warned that delays in addressing this situation could lead to “the worst disruption in the supply chain since the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.”

In his remarks to the 15-member Security Council, Guterres said, “These pressures are turning into empty fuel tanks, empty shelves, and empty plates, and the human cost of this crisis is rising.”

The UN Secretary-General added, “I urge the parties to open the strait, allow ships to pass, without tariffs and without discrimination, let trade resume, and allow the global economy to breathe again.”

He also emphasized that a prolonged disruption in this route could lead to a global food crisis, pushing millions, especially in Africa and South Asia, toward hunger and poverty.
