The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has announced that Afghanistan is among the countries with the highest number of obstetric fistula cases in the world.
According to the organization’s report, Afghanistan ranks fifth in terms of the prevalence of this condition, with around 15,000 women and girls in the country living with this childbirth-related injury.
Obstetric fistula is a serious health condition caused by prolonged and difficult labor, as well as the lack of proper medical care. It can lead to physical disability and social isolation for women.
The United Nations Population Fund stated that preventing and treating this condition requires access to healthcare services, safe surgery, and essential medical equipment.
The organization emphasized that strengthening the healthcare system and increasing women’s access to maternal care during childbirth are key factors in reducing this problem.
The agency also stressed the importance of continuing efforts to eliminate fistula, saying that addressing this issue is part of broader programs aimed at improving maternal health in vulnerable countries, including Afghanistan.
