Summary

WhatsApp has announced that users will soon be able to communicate with others using a “username” instead of their phone number. According to the company, the username registration process for this feature has already begun this week and will be gradually rolled out to all users by the end of the year.

On Monday (8 Saratan), WhatsApp stated on its X account that phone numbers are considered personal information, and many users prefer to connect with new people without sharing their numbers. The “username” feature has therefore been introduced to address this need.

According to the company, users will be able to register and save their usernames through the latest version of the app by navigating to Settings > Account > Username, allowing them to use it once the feature is officially activated.

WhatsApp added that there will be no public search or directory for usernames, and users will only be able to contact others if they know their exact username. The company said this approach has been adopted to further enhance user privacy.

It also noted that certain usernames associated with public figures, organizations, and business accounts will be reserved in advance to prevent identity theft and the creation of fake accounts. Additionally, users will be able to use an optional security code alongside their username, ensuring that only those who possess the code can contact them.
