Local sources report that Ubaidullah Kaplanzada, approximately 40 years old, was shot in the “Akt-Bin” area of the district on Thursday afternoon, 2 Mizan, and died from the severity of his injuries.
According to the sources, Kaplanzada sustained a gunshot wound to the head and, after being transferred to a hospital, died the following day as a result of his injuries.
There is currently no further information regarding the identity of the attackers, the motive behind the shooting, or the circumstances surrounding the incident. Local Taliban officials in Nuristan have also made no comment on the incident.
The incident comes amid reports in recent years of people being killed by unidentified assailants in several provinces of Afghanistan. However, there are no comprehensive and comparable nationwide statistics on the prevalence of such incidents.
United Nations reports have previously expressed concern over the continued occurrence of violations of the right to life, including the killing of individuals associated with the former government and former security forces, and have called for investigations, the identification of perpetrators, and accountability.
Given the lack of information regarding those responsible for the incident, it is currently not possible to attribute Kaplanzada’s killing to any specific individual or group.
