Construction of a new rice processing and packaging factory has begun in Qarghayi district of Laghman province, with an investment of 162 million Afghanis.
The Taliban’s Department of industry and commerce in Laghman has stated that the factory is being built in the Char Bagh area and is expected to be completed within the next two months.
According to information from the department, the factory will provide direct employment opportunities for approximately 100 people and indirect employment for between 400 and 600 individuals.
Haji Salim, the owner of the factory, said that the facility will have the capacity to process 40,000 kilograms of rice within 24 hours. He added that, in addition to rice produced in Laghman, rice from Nangarhar, Baghlan, and Kunduz provinces will also be processed and packaged at the factory. The packaged products will then be distributed to markets in Nangarhar, Kunar, Nuristan, Kabul, Paktia, and Khost provinces.
The project is being launched at a time when Afghan industrialists continue to raise concerns over the shortage of suitable industrial land and electricity, saying that commitments made to address these challenges have yet to be implemented in practice.
