Lindsey Snell, an independent American journalist and documentary filmmaker, has alleged that a member of the Al-Nusra Front who interviewed with her years ago and subsequently played a role in her kidnapping is now serving as the Chargé d'Affaires at the Syrian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Snell raised the claim on Tuesday, July 28, by publishing a video report on the social media platform X. In the report, she re-released a segment of an interview she says she conducted in 2015 in Syria's Idlib province.
According to Snell, the individual appearing in the video masked at the time interviewed with her under the name "Mohammad." She claims that this individual is none other than Mohammad Al-Qanatri, the current Chargé d'Affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Washington.
The journalist noted that the interview was recorded when large swathes of Idlib province were under the control of the Al-Nusra Front. She cited similarities in the eyes, facial features, speech patterns, and a comparison of past and present spoken audio clips as the basis for her claim.
Snell has previously detailed her experiences in Syria, stating that during a reporting mission in 2016, she was kidnapped by individuals affiliated with the Al-Nusra Front and held captive for about two weeks. She mentioned being interrogated multiple times during her captivity before escaping, only to be detained and briefly imprisoned by Turkish security forces upon reaching the Turkish border.
However, in her latest report, Snell did not provide new concrete evidence verifying the identity of the individual in the video or confirming his membership in the Al-Nusra Front. Her core argument relies primarily on the recorded interview from Idlib and a side-by-side comparison of the individual's past and recent statements.
As of the publication of this report, the Syrian Transitional Government, the Syrian Embassy in Washington, and U.S. officials have not reacted to the allegation. Furthermore, no independent or official organization has verified or debunked the claim linking the individual in the video to the current Syrian Chargé d'Affaires.
The Al-Nusra Front was formed in 2012 under the leadership of Ahmed al-Sharaa, known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, as Al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria. In 2016, the group announced it was severing ties with Al-Qaeda and rebranded itself as "Jabhat Fatah al-Sham." It later merged with several other factions to form "Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham" (HTS). Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in 2024, Ahmed al-Sharaa assumed the presidency of Syria's transitional government, after which HTS was dissolved.
