Amnesty International stated in a press release on Tuesday that in “Azad Kashmir,” not only has internet access been cut off, but mobile telecommunications services have also intermittently faced disruptions and irregularities.
The organization said that in the region, internet services have been suspended since June 5 following protests launched by the Joint Public Action Committee.m
Amnesty International stressed that a complete internet shutdown is in violation of international human rights law and is inherently a disproportionate measure. According to the organization, such restrictions should never be imposed.
The press release further noted that reports have also been received of physical restrictions being imposed in response to the protests, including blockades on major roads in the region, which have disrupted the supply of food, medicine, and other essential goods.
Amnesty International emphasized that these restrictions are negatively affecting the fundamental rights of the population, particularly access to healthcare services, freedom of movement, and the right to life.
The organization called on Pakistani authorities to immediately lift all restrictions on movement and telecommunications and to restore unhindered access for both the public and humanitarian services in the region.
Meanwhile, the Joint Public Action Committee in Kashmir has launched its protest in support of the abolition of 12 seats reserved for migrants in the Kashmir Assembly and other demands.
The Kashmir government has stated that it is willing to engage in dialogue with the protesters; however, no significant progress has yet been reported in the negotiation process, and the sit-in by the Joint Public Action Committee continues.
