Tajik media, citing the country’s Committee of Emergency Situations, have reported that the body of Alisher Mirzo Nabot, the governor of Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, has been recovered from the Panj River along the Afghan border.
According to the reports, the vehicle carrying Nabot plunged into the Panj River in the Darvoz district of Tajikistan on June 17. His wife, young daughter, deputy, and driver were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Authorities said Nabot’s body was recovered on Friday, June 26, approximately 20 kilometers downstream from the crash site.
Reports indicate that search operations are still underway to locate his wife, young daughter, and deputy. Tajikistan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said the preliminary cause of the accident was excessive speed and the driver’s loss of control of the vehicle.
According to media reports, the vehicle struck border engineering structures and barbed wire before plunging into the Panj River.
Alisher Mirzo Nabot was 45 years old and had served as the governor of Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region since November 2021.
