UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, said that London would not tolerate threats, intimidation, or hostile activities by groups linked to Iran on British soil.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said Miliband reiterated Britain’s position regarding threats attributed to Iran-linked groups and highlighted the security of the Jewish community in the UK as another key concern.
According to the ministry, in July, Britain banned support for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and an affiliated group under newly introduced powers aimed at countering state threats. Tehran has previously denied using proxy groups to carry out such activities.
In response, Abbas Araghchi, in a message posted on his Telegram account, called on European countries to change what he described as “destructive and irresponsible” policies toward Iran and developments in the region.
Araghchi also described interference in the internal affairs of countries and what he called the “instrumentalization of human rights concepts” as unacceptable.
The UK Foreign Office did not provide further details about Araghchi’s response to Miliband’s warnings. The meeting took place amid ongoing disagreements between the two countries over security issues related to Iran and activities attributed to groups affiliated with Tehran.
