The United States national football team secured a 2–0 victory against Australia in their second match of Group D at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, clinching qualification for the knockout stage one match early. The team scored both of its goals in the first half and, with six points, now sits in a strong position in the group standings.
In the 11th minute, the United States took the lead through an own goal by Australia’s defender Cameron Burgess. Later, shortly before the end of the first half, Alex Freeman scored the team’s second goal. The goal was initially disallowed for offside but was subsequently awarded after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
With this victory, the United States national team has secured progression to the Round of 16 with six points. The team will face Türkiye in its final group-stage match.
Meanwhile, Australia, with three points, still retains a chance of advancing to the next round. It will play its final group-stage match against Paraguay.
