The European Union has stated that violence and the killing of journalists remain a serious global issue. According to the union’s data, in 2025 alone, 129 journalists and media workers were killed in various countries.
The EU has added that this situation raises serious concerns for freedom of speech and shows that journalists continue to face significant dangers because of their profession. According to the statistics, the number of journalists killed since 1993 has reached 1,922.
European officials emphasized that journalists should be able to perform their work without fear or threats. They have urged governments to take practical steps to protect journalists and bring those responsible for violence against them to justice.
The European Union has also stressed that media freedom is the foundation of democracy and its protection is a shared responsibility of all countries.
