Summary

State-run Syrian media reported that at least six people were killed and 22 others injured following a bomb explosion at a crowded café in central Damascus.

The explosion occurred in a café near the Damascus Palace of Justice. Syrian authorities stated that a homemade bomb had been planted at the location. No individual or group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Following the explosion, security and emergency forces cordoned off the area, and ambulances transported the wounded to city hospitals for treatment.

Maher Al-Adlabi, the Governor of Damascus, said the attack was carried out using a homemade bomb. He added that the perpetrators would be brought to justice and noted that whenever the country moves toward stability, certain parties attempt to undermine security.

Eyewitnesses said the intensity of the explosion shook nearby buildings. Mohammad Al-Dhahabi, the owner of an optical shop near the scene, also said that the scenes following the blast, including the injured and the victims, were reminiscent of the years of the Syrian civil war.

The attack comes as the government of Ahmed al-Sharaa, following the removal of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, continues to face security challenges.

Although no one has claimed responsibility for the explosion, Syrian security officials have previously warned that ISIS is attempting to exploit security gaps to carry out new attacks.

While ISIS has been weakened in recent years, Syrian and Iraqi officials, as well as several Western countries, continue to view the group as one of the most significant threats to security and Syria’s political transition process.
