Fawzia Koofi, a women’s rights activist and former Afghan Member of Parliament, has called on the people of Herat to engage in civil disobedience against what she described as “Taliban repression.” She claims that the Taliban detained 60 women in Herat province over the past two days for what the group described as “inappropriate hijab.”
In a post on the social media platform X, Ms. Koofi wrote that the “endless suffering of women” and the “Taliban’s ongoing war against them” continue unabated. She described the incident as an example of the restrictions imposed on women in Afghanistan.
According to Koofi, the Taliban said the reason for the arrests was “inappropriate hijab.” Taliban officials have not yet issued any official comment regarding these allegations.
The former Afghan parliamentarian also referred to the current situation in the country in a metaphorical remark, writing: “When an ant is about to die, it grows wings.” She made this statement in relation to the Taliban’s conduct.
Koofi concluded by expressing hope that the people of Herat will respond to what she called increasing repression and restrictions, and that they will not remain silent in the face of such measures.
