Summary

Iranian state media have reported that the country’s Supreme Leader has approved pardons or sentence reductions for more than 2,000 prisoners, a move that Iranian officials say will pave the way for the release of a significant number of them in the coming days.

According to a report by the state-run broadcaster Press TV, the decision was made following a request from Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, the head of Iran’s judiciary. Iranian judicial authorities stated that implementation of the measure will begin once the necessary administrative procedures have been completed.

The report said that most of the prisoners covered by the decree will either be released after completing the required legal formalities or will benefit from reductions in their prison sentences.

However, Iranian media noted that inmates convicted of security-related offenses, including espionage and certain similar crimes, will not be eligible for the pardon or sentence commutation.

The announcement comes at a time when Iran has experienced widespread protests across various parts of the country in recent years. During these demonstrations, thousands of people were arrested, and a number of them were subsequently sentenced by the courts.
