Iran’s Islamic revolutionary guard corps (IRGC) has announced that four of its military personnel were killed in a U.S. attack on Kermanshah province in western Iran on Tuesday night. With the addition of these four deaths, the reported death toll from U.S. attacks on Iran the previous day has risen to 18.
The Fars news agency reported that the four were members of the IRGC aerospace force in Kermanshah. Iranian officials had previously said that at least five civilians were killed in a U.S. airstrike on a wedding ceremony in southern Iran.
According to published reports, seven other people were also killed at three separate locations in Khuzestan Province. Three members of the Basij militia were also reportedly killed on Lavan Island. No further details have been released about the identities of those killed or the circumstances of their deaths.
Military hostilities between the United States and Iran have resumed after a month-long pause. The United States has targeted positions belonging to the IRGC, while Iran has reported carrying out missile and drone attacks against U.S. and allied positions. The developments have heightened concerns over a broader escalation of the conflict across the region.
On Wednesday, 11 Sonbola, the IRGC announced that it had targeted a base in Kuwait using missiles and drones. According to the IRGC, the facility housing a U.S. commander and drone-related installations were among the targets.
Kuwait’s Fire Force also said that emergency crews had extinguished a fire at a residential complex in the capital early Wednesday. According to the agency, the fire broke out after an Iranian drone struck the site.
Qatar, which had previously mediated efforts to establish a ceasefire between the parties, said in a statement that Iran’s attacks would make efforts to contain tensions more difficult. Doha also reiterated its concern over the consequences of continued military hostilities in the region.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in the statement that it considers the Islamic Republic of Iran “fully responsible under international law” for the attacks and their resulting consequences. The ministry also reaffirmed its support for diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions.
