Ismail Miakhel, the former Director General of Afghanistan’s National Radio and Television (RTA), has criticized the policies and positions of the international community toward Afghanistan, stating that the promises regarding the Taliban’s transformation have proven to be false.
In a post published on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Miakhel wrote that Afghans have, for years, called for political consensus, national reconciliation, and peaceful solutions. However, according to him, instead of responding to these demands, the Taliban have intensified restrictions, arbitrary arrests, repression, and widespread bans targeting women.
Miakhel said that the people of Afghanistan have endured the bitter realities of war, suicide bombings, displacement, and the collapse of their political system. For this reason, he argued, Afghans understand the value of peace better than most, and no one should presume to lecture them about violence or peace.
In his view, Afghanistan today is not experiencing genuine peace. Rather, millions of people particularly those who stand up for their rights and dignity are living under severe restrictions, while the country has effectively become an open-air prison.
Miakhel also criticized what he described as the international community’s double standards. He argued that when other countries use military force to confront extremist groups, their actions are regarded as legitimate self-defense, whereas the voices of Afghans resisting oppression are met with criticism and condemnation.
He concluded by emphasizing that a just and lasting peace cannot be achieved without safeguarding rights and ensuring justice. Afghanistan, he said, should belong to its people not to a group that governs through fear and coercion.
