Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has cancelled his planned visit to the United States, stating that remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump were an insult to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and to Italy as a whole.
The decision came after Trump claimed that Giorgia Meloni had asked him for a photo together during the G7 summit and that he had only agreed to it out of “pity.” Meloni rejected the claim as “completely false,” saying: “Neither I nor Italy ever beg.”
Reports indicate that relations between Trump and Meloni have become strained in recent months due to the war in Iran, U.S. policies, and other political disagreements.
